Postural Restoration® (PRI) is an approach to physical therapy that explores how posture, breathing, muscle activity, and movement patterns interact to influence how the body functions. Developed through the work of the Postural Restoration Institute®, this approach recognizes that the human body is naturally asymmetrical and that differences between the left and right sides influence how we stand, breathe, move, and adapt to daily activities.
Rather than focusing solely on the area where pain or dysfunction occurs, Postural Restoration looks at the body as an interconnected system. It explores how habitual postures, repetitive movements, breathing mechanics, and patterns of muscle overuse may contribute to restricted mobility, altered joint mechanics, and persistent symptoms.
Treatment focuses on helping the body regain more balanced movement options, improve coordination between muscle groups, and restore efficient breathing mechanics. Through individualized exercises, specific breathing techniques, postural adjustments, and movement retraining, patients learn to recognize and change habitual patterns that may be limiting their function.
The goal is not to achieve perfect symmetry, but to improve the body's ability to adapt, move with greater ease, and distribute the demands of daily life more effectively. By addressing contributing factors rather than focusing exclusively on symptoms, Postural Restoration offers another way to understand movement dysfunction and support lasting improvements in comfort, mobility, and physical performance.
There is no single posture, breathing pattern, or exercise that is right for everyone. At PelviCare, we use a comprehensive assessment to understand your symptoms, movement patterns, and individual needs.
We select treatment techniques based on your findings and monitor your response as we go. Depending on your goals, your plan may combine pelvic floor rehabilitation, breathing exercises, mobility work, strength training, and functional movement retraining.
Our goal is not to make your body perfectly symmetrical. It is to help you find more comfortable, efficient movement and improve the function that matters in your everyday life.
The pelvic floor does not function in isolation. By looking at the connections between breathing, posture, movement, and pelvic floor function we can find a comprehensive approach to promote “neutrality” and prevent future injuries.
